Greetings from the East:
Last Tuesday we exercised our duty and right as a citizen to vote for our public officials. On Thursday members of Arcadia Lodge exercised their duty & right to vote for their new officers. For the first time in 20 years, all 5 elected offices will have a new brother serving. Brother Josh Tostlebe was unanimously elected to be your Worshipful Master for 2007. His installation will be Sunday December 10 at 2:00 P.M. In addition to Josh, Brother Jeremy Davis was elected to Senior Warden and Brother Paul Miller was elected to Junior Warden. For the first time in many, many years, Arcadia Lodge has a new Treasurer & a new Secretary. Brother Barry Sieh was elected Treasurer and Brother Jay Cole Simser was elected Secretary. After 20 years of excellence at their respective offices, Brothers Jim Sears, Treasurer, and Don Rhead, Secretary has stepped down. To show our appreciation for these two brother's dedicated, tireless, and capable work, the brothers of Arcadia Lodge honored them as Treasurer Emeritus & Secretary Emeritus. In addition, on Saturday January 6, 2007 at 6:00 P.M. there will be a dinner honoring both of them and also honoring Brother Dan Shaffer, who is stepping down from numerous years of being our Tyler , at the Lodge. Tickets are being sold in advance for $10 each and it is an open dinner. Please contact Jay Cole Simser for tickets. Please make a point to be there to honor and say thank you to these three brothers.
The Cyclone Chapter DeMolay is selling Village Inn Pie Certificates for $10 each again this season. These are great pies for the holidays and also make great gifts for teachers, paper carriers, hair stylists, and other people you want to say a little more than just thanks. It is a valuable fundraiser for the Cyclone Chapter DeMolay. Please make a point to buy some Pie Certificates this month from your favorite DeMolay member. If you don't know one, please call Taylor Knight at 233-1745 and he will see that you get as many Village Inn Pie Certificates as you need.
November 16 we will be holding a 1st degree and November 30 we will be hosting two 2nd Degrees. I have been pleased with our stated meeting attendance but disappointed with our Degree attendance. We only get one chance to make a first impression. When I think back to my Degrees, there were a lot of brothers in attendance-and it left a lasting impression with me. In talking to a lot of you, your experience was the same as mine. Recently we have held Degrees where the guests outnumbered the members-even sadder is that without the guests, we would not have been able to have even conducted the Degree. We have raised a lot of brothers, but how can we expect these new brothers to get involved and come back when the example they see is otherwise? I challenge each of you to come to at least one Degree this month.
As a Country, Lodge, and individual we all have much to be thankful. I wish each of you a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
Steve Gwiasda, WM

Greetings from the East:
For those of you who were unable to make the October stated meeting you missed the announcement that your Lodge won the Gold Lodge of the Year award for a 3rd consecutive year! To accomplish such a feat took a lot of efforts by many, many brothers. You also missed Brother Paul Miller being presented with is MI certificate, our 2nd brother in as many years to achieve this high honor of proficiency. Yes, your Lodge is very busy!
The October calendar continues to be full with a cornucopia of Degree work starting with a special night, Tuesday October 10, for two First Degrees, followed by Thirds the next three Thursdays. (Oct 12, 19, & 26) In addition, another petition was read last week!
Along with voting on that petition Nov 2 we will also be electing new Officers. I am amazed how fast this year has gone.
We are also having our annual Hay Ride Sunday October 22 at 3:00 P.M. at Brown's Flowers Farm located at 73495 120th Street by Zearing. A map is on our website
http://www.iowamasons.com/249MastersPage.html, or you can go to
http://www.horseflowers.com
It should be a great day with a hay ride starting at 3:00 P.M. and a hot dog roast with the fixings afterwards. There is no charge and all are welcome, Masons & Non-Masons as well as their families. It is an especially great outing for kids! The wagon is pulled by Clydesdale horses through some very scenic areas of NE Story County. We do need a head count both for the hosts to know as well as so we can have enough food. Please e-mail me at Gwiasda@mchsi.com or call me at 515-450-2102 to RSVP. I am looking forward to a good turnout.
Looking beyond into November we will have the continued plethora of Degree work plus the traditional Election Night Soup Supper Tuesday, November 7, where each of the officers serve soup that they have made for all to have after they have voted. Show your "I Voted" sticker and enjoy a free supper at Arcadia Lodge. Get fed for doing your civic duty-what a deal!
November 9 is the Grand Master's Area Meeting. I encourage all to attend, especially our newer Brothers. This is a terrific way to learn more about how you can get involved and make a difference in Masonry.
Lastly, don't forget the $5 dinner before the stated meeting November 2. The best deal in town!

Greetings from the East
I am writing this in the shadows of Grand Lodge less than a week away. It will be my 3rd Grand Lodge and last as a voting representative. My first Grand Lodge was in Cedar Rapids , I went with now Past Masters Tim Grandon & Doug Petty and was a little unsure about what to expect. And yes, I mean I was both unsure about what to expect at Grand Lodge as well as what to expect traveling with Brothers Tim & Doug. Grand Lodge was great! It really profoundly changed how I viewed my Masonic journey both personally and as an officer of Arcadia . The traveling with Tim and Doug........ Grand Lodge brings opportunity to learn and the possibility of change. I am excited to participate and look forward to sharing with all of you what comes out of Grand Lodge at our October 5 stated meeting which will be our Rusty Nail Night & Fill the Lodge Night. Please plan to attend-don't forget the $5 dinner at 6:30PM.
Arcadia Lodge continues to be blessed with many new petitions. As it stands, we have a 3rd Degree September 21, three 2nds on September 28, and 3 petitions being investigated, plus we have another candidate in waiting who was temporarily transferred before he could start his 1st. The future continues to look bright for our Lodge!
Have you been on our web site lately? http://www.iowamasons.com/249SiteMap.html Brother Dan Shaffer continues to be our Web Master and does a magnificent job of keeping things up to date plus he is always adding new items. Check out the site, look at the calendar, the pictures of our newest brothers, read Brother Jay Cole Simser's web surfing travels, and the many other neat features.
That calendar on the website continues to fill up, besides the aforementioned Degrees and the Oct 5 Rusty Nail Night & Fill the Lodge Night, we will have our annual hayride & wiener roast (open to anyone) Oct 22, and an Election Night Soup Supper Nov 7. More details in the upcoming newsletters or better yet, watch the web site! Brother Secretary Don Rhead is temporarily stepping aside as Secretary. Brother Jay Cole Simser will be the acting Secretary until either Brother Don is back or his term ends. Brother Nick Delahoussaye will fill in for Chaplain. We all wish Don a speedy recovery!
At the September stated meeting, the Brothers voted to raise the dues $10 a year. With utilities on the rise, this very modest 83 cents a month dues increase will help immensely getting Arcadia Lodge's budget back in balance. Thank you to all who saw a need and provided a solution.
It has been a great summer and I expect that to continue this fall. As you can see, there are numerous ways to get involved so please take advantage of each and every opportunity.
Steve Gwiasda, WM

Greetings from the East
Pretty soon the sounds of kids at the beach, softball & baseball games, and barbecues will give way to the sounds of school bells, football games, and autumn colors. For Arcadia Lodge Fall means the return of the $5 dinner, the fall hayride, and Grand Lodge.
July was a productive month for Arcadia Lodge as we put on several Degrees, worked almost a week of breakfasts for the National Special Olympics and had what was, in my opinion, the best Table Lodge we have held. A great job by Brother Jeremy Davis Junior Warden! If you missed Table Lodge this year I'd urge you to make a point to attend next year. It only keeps getting bigger & better, although the bar has been raised this year I know that challenge will be met next year.
Thank you to the brothers who participated in the Lodge cleanup a few weeks ago. We got some trimming done, some weeding, and a general yard cleanup. Because of your efforts, the Lodge looks better for everyone!
The first $5 dinner will be Sep 7 at 6:30. All are welcome to attend. This, of course, precedes our 7:30 stated meeting. This continues to be one of the best deals in town!
The hayride will be Sunday October 22. It will be pretty similar to previous years. I will have more details in a future newsletter but please mark this date on your calendar now. This event is great fun for young kids as well as adults. It is also a great time to bring a prospective member and even their family.
Aug 17 we are doing one 3rd Degree. August 24 we have two 1st Degrees. These are important dates for the brother and candidates. In a show of support for them please make an effort to attend one or both of these Degrees. We will be dark Aug 31 so that the brothers can attend the ISU home football game.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Greetings from the East:
Ames may be in the beginnings of a drought but there is no drought at Arcadia Lodge. We have two candidates taking their First July 13-we open at 7:00 P.M., and four, yes that is correct .... four, brothers taking their Second July 20-we open at 6:00 P.M. In addition, we have more petitions to vote on in August. Outstanding!!
Arcadia Lodge is doing more than Degree work, for example due to the efforts of seventeen brothers $980 was raised last week working food service for the National Special Olympics. This money will go into our scholarship fund; a great job by all the brothers, especially Past Master Brother Bill Yungclas for organizing this fundraiser.
July is also Table Lodge. A few tickets are still available for this Friday July 21 event with social hour at 6:30 P.M. and dinner at 7:30 P.M. at The Basil, but there are limited seats. Please have your $25 ticket bought by July 18. Please contact Brother Secretary Don Rhead or Brother Junior Warden Jeremy Davis for details or to buy a ticket. This is one of my personal favorite events and I expect a great crowd!
On Tuesday July 18, we are going to have a Lodge cleanup. Please meet at the Lodge at 6:00 P.M.; bring weed eaters, gloves, trimmers, etc., if you have them. This should take maybe an hour if we get a good turn out. By everyone pitching in just a little it will spruce up the Lodge and be easy on us all. I will plan to see you out there. Please contract Past Master Brother Doug Petty with any questions.
In case you missed our July stated meeting, Brother Senior Warden Bob Harvey has asked to step out of the line the end of this month. We appreciated all of Bob's dedicated work and are disappointed to see him leave. The others in the line have agreed to move up a chair, thus Brother Paul Miller will be Senior Deacon, Brother Dave Baker will be Junior Deacon, and Brother Jason Schaben will be Senior Steward. Congratulations to all the aforementioned Brothers, I know you will continue to do excellent work in your new positions. That leaves the Junior Steward chair open and it pleases me to inform you that Brother Marty Jacobs will be Arcadia Lodge's Junior Steward. Marty will do a terrific job and the line and I are excited to have Marty aboard.
There is much going on at Arcadia Lodge, I hope each of you take advantage of the opportunities to get involved

Greetings from the East
When I was elected to serve the Brothers of Arcadia Lodge I knew there would be some work as well as rewards, but I am quickly realizing I over estimated the amount work and under estimated the number of rewards. The Line and Brothers really do the labor and I end up enjoying the fruits. The most recent reward was getting to participate in the Memorial Day Ceremonies. I have never been to one of these before but will now make a point to attend future ceremonies. It was a very moving and inspiring morning. I would encourage everyone to attend next year. Thank you to Brother Scot Werkmeister for serving the Ames Patriotic Council on behalf of Arcadia Lodge, you did an outstanding job!
One event I was sorry I missed was the annual picnic at Pine Lake. While we didn't add to our consecutive streak of winning the tug-o-war, I was told a great time was had by all in attendance. It sounds like this event keeps growing and is fast becoming one of the premier Masonic social and fellowship events of the year.
It pleases me to report that petitions continue to be received and we have a full month of Degree work scheduled in June with more Degree work ahead in the next months. The amazing growth we have been experiencing continues! Is our continued growth a result of the good things we are doing or is it because of the good things we are doing resulting in our continued growth? I am not sure it much matters. What does matter is our Lodge continues to get stronger by adding new solid Brothers and offering them reasons to get and stay involved.
Some nice money, close to a thousand dollars, was raised for our scholarship fund by a group of Brothers working the Iowa State University breakfast a week or so ago. Thanks to all who helped out and special thanks to Brother Bill Yungclas for organizing the workers. I believe we have another opportunity to work in early July for the National Special Olympics. Work a day if you can and find out why there really is a reason Iowa State University Dining people put Arcadia Lodge on the A Line!
Hope to see you out at the Lodge in June, Degrees every Thursday opening at 7 P.M. this month. Don't forget Table Lodge is July 21 at The Basil. Advance tickets required so please get your ticket bought now if you have not already done so. Tickets are only $25 and can be purchased from Brother Secretary Don Rhead. Greetings from the East
$8750.00! That is how much five local Ames High Students received in total from Arcadia Lodge & the Grand Lodge of Iowa last Wednesday, May 3. Four days earlier there were many brothers participating in the Ames Middle School Cornerstone Laying. The next morning the Ames Tribune had a very nice article about the ceremony and Masonry. Brothers, our Lodge is active and continues to be an asset to the Ames community, we all should take pride in our membership!
Speaking of membership, I am please to report we have one brother in process, one candidate in waiting, and 3 new petitions to be voted on in June. In addition, I know of a few more prospects from whom I anticipate we will soon be seeing petitions. The next two Thursdays (May 11 & May 18) will be open for practice for anyone interested. There are lots of opportunities to get involved so please join us! We will have at least 1 DL & 1-2 MI there to work with us.
Sunday, May 28 is our annual picnic with Montague Lodge 117 at Pine Lake State Park near Eldora. Tug-O-War is at 6 PM sharp, with a $5 meal to follow. I am expecting to write about Arcadia's glorious victory in the next newsletter so here is asking for a large turnout. There are some people canoeing beforehand and camping is available; for more information on either please call Past Master Doug Petty 268-8006.
Table Lodge tickets are officially on sale. This Friday, July 21 event will again be at The Basil and will be one of the highlights of the year and a steal at $25 each! Those of you who have attended before know this is a great night of food, fun, & fellowship. We have limited space so get your tickets purchased now. Please see Brother Secretary Don Rhead for tickets.
Our last 6:30 Five Buck meal until September is Thursday June 1. I am disappointed I will be out of state that day and will miss it, but I hope we have another good crowd for it. Brother Senior Warden Josh Tostlebe will be conducting the stated meeting so please come out and support Josh, he will do an outstanding job, I know!

Greetings from the East
Brothers, I attended the Grand Master's Neighborhood Meeting that was held at our Lodge a few weeks ago. Listening to the challenges many area Lodges are facing in membership and financial areas, I felt very fortunate and very proud to be part of such a vibrant Lodge as Arcadia! Due to the efforts of so many we have a Lodge that, quite frankly, is admired by many. Our Lodge has the choice to become complacent or continue to improve. I am pleased to report I am seeing a continued trend of improvement. For example, due to the dedication of our DL, Brother Rollen Phillips and our new MI, Brother Bill Yungclas our ritual keeps getting better, we were able to get in a practice in March and will schedule more as we can. Congratulations to Bill on the achievement of his MI! The Attendance was outstanding for the very good meal served by Eastern Star and the stated meeting was well attended too. In fact, when the volunteer sheet went out for people to work the breakfast at ISU the week of Memorial Day Weekend, all positions were filled which will net us around $800. This money raised will allow us to do something additional for the community, perhaps a second scholarship? Sunday I enjoyed a very nice installation ceremony for the Cyclone Chapter DeMolay. I met the newly installed Master Counselor Drew Schlosser who I know will do a great job! The month of April offers much activity with a First Degree (possibly two) April 20 & a Third Degree April 27, along with a Cornerstone Laying Ceremony April 29 at the new Ames Middle School on Mortensen Road. It starts at 10AM and I hope I see lots of brothers in attendance.
Because of all the positive things going on in Arcadia, it troubles me to have to mention this, but we still have about 20% of our members who have not yet paid their $60 dues for 2006. Please get them remitted this month, either by mail, or better yet, come out to one of the Degrees and remit then.
We still have many more activities planned; May 28 will be the canoe/picnic event with Eldora at Pine Lake. Please see Brother Doug Petty for more details. June 14 will be a ceremonial flag burning held at our Lodge for Flag Day. July 21 will be one of my favorite events, Table Lodge. Tickets are being printed and Brother Jeremy Davis assures me we will continue our tradition of having a top notch speaker. Watch for more details next month.
It is a privilege to be a Mason & a joy to be a part of Arcadia!

Greetings from the East
According to the Friday edition of the Des Moines Register the unemployment rate is at a 4 year low. This is good news. Many people, such as me, who are in a construction related industry, can attest the economy is robust. Opportunities abound! Arcadia Lodge is no exception. Not only do we have the opportunity to get involved in ongoing degree work, but we also have two offices open affective Jan 1, the Treasurer & Secretary. As most of you are aware, Brother Treasurer, Jim Sears and Brother Secretary, Don Rhead are both retiring after a number of years of dedicated service. Arcadia Lodge is looking for a few good brothers. We have had a couple of brothers express an interest but need at least two more to intern. The ultimate goal is to have two trained brothers ready by Dec and two more ready back ups. Please let Brothers Sears or Rhead know, or me, if you have a desire to serve the Lodge in this capacity. What an awesome opportunity to get involved!
February was a short month in days but Arcadia Lodge still managed to get in some degree work. The month ended magnificently with an outstanding Patriots Day presentation, sponsored by the Cyclone Chapter of the DeMolay, which featured a fascinating talk by local author Norm Rudi. Mr. Rudi spoke about the heroic experiences of local people who bravely served our country in the Armed Forces in World War II-including our own Brother Rollen Philips. It was the fastest hour I can recall and without a doubt one of the best Masonic activities I have ever enjoyed. If you missed it I would urge you to go listen to Mr. Rudi if ever the chance arises. Great job by the DeMolay boys and advisors, thank you!
The coming weeks look to be filled with more opportunities to get involved. March 16 we are holding a practice for anyone interested in learning a degree role. March 23 is a First Degree, and March 30 will likely be a Second Degree or another practice session. April 6 is our stated meeting-and don't forget to get signed up for the $5 dinner, the best value for eats in Ames, bar none.
Lastly, Saturday April 29 will be a Cornerstone Laying at the new Ames Middle School. We open Lodge at 9:00 A.M. and then go to the Middle School for a 10 A.M. Cornerstone Laying Ceremony. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE A STONG SHOWING OF BROTHERS THERE!! This is a terrific opportunity for Arcadia Lodge to be very visible to the public. We need to make the most of it. Please block this morning off on your calendars today.

Greetings from the East
In my past two correspondences, I have talked about how we need to get our new brothers involved. Today I offer some opportunities! May 24-29 and July 2-8 Arcadia Lodge has the opportunity to work at Iowa State University serving breakfast. Each week would add almost $1,000 that we could use for charity, scholarship fund, or even our general fund. I have personally worked some past breakfasts and plan to work some days this year and have always found it enjoyable and memorable. It is a great way to help make a difference in the Lodge and enjoy some fellowship. And, it only takes about 3 hours of your day. Brother Bill Yungclas has the details (phone 292-9274) - he is also looking for someone to Captain the July week. Please, brothers, step up to the plate!
Last Wednesday Arcadia Lodge put on two Second Degrees and those in attendance were treated to Brother Eugene, yet again flawlessly and eloquently, giving the beautiful stair lecture. Brother Gene has been a pillar, one of the many brothers of Arcadia Lodge stepping up to the plate when called upon. In March, we are going to lose Brother Gene as an active member as he is going to relocate to Kansas to be closer to his children. Please join me in recognizing and thanking Brother Gene for the outstanding work he has done for Arcadia Lodge.
On Monday Feb. 27, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, the DeMolay will be sponsoring a Patriot's Day talk featuring local author Norm Rudi. Mr. Rudi has written a book, " A Full Measure" which is about heroes from World War II, including Brother Rollen Phillips from our very own Lodge. This should prove to be a memorable evening. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Also on March 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM Arcadia Lodge will have the Teacher of the Year Banquet. Please get your tickets purchased from Secretary Don Rhead if you have not already done so. This is an important outreach to the community.
Lastly, please come for the 6:30 PM $5 dinner March 2 prior to our 7:30 PM stated meeting. The meals have been fantastic and attendance has been great-but we would always welcome more. A great time of great food and great fellowship for all is guaranteed!

Greetings from the East
President Dwight David Eisenhower said that in preparing for battle, he always found plans were useless, but that planning was indispensable. Planning is essential in all successful endeavors. As 2006 is starting we all find we are planning in one way or another. Many of us are planning in our jobs, others planning their academic paths, and even others may be planning their personal lives. Arcadia Lodge is no different; it takes much planning for a successful year. Already, planning is going on for the May picnic with Montague Lodge, Table Lodge, ISU work days, Teacher of the Year, Memorial Day, Grand Lodge, the Fall Hay Ride, and numerous other functions that keeps Arcadia Lodge vibrant. It is within this wide variety of activities that all should be able to find something appealing. The people who do the planning deserve our thanks and a great way to show that thanks and appreciation is to participate in as many of the activities as you can. Please watch the website and Jay's calendar for upcoming events and get involved!
We had a good turnout for our first stated meeting and dinner in January. The meal was delicious and was followed by Grand Secretary Bill Crawford presenting Past Master Doug Petty with the 2005 Gold Medal for 2005 Iowa Lodge of the Year in Lodge. Those in attendance were also treated to a brief summary of the Grand Master's Mentoring Program for new brothers given by the Grand Secretary Bill Crawford. This is a program where new brothers are paired up with a mentor. Brother Nate Johnson is going to chair our mentoring program and would welcome some help in implementing the program. Also, mentors will be needed. You can contact Nate at atlas@iastate.edu or 460-5551 if you want to help.
We also have been busy with Degree work as we wrap up a productive January. We have some more Degrees to put on in February. We have already had some new brothers ask to get involved in Degree work and always welcome more. The opportunities abound!
Please don't forget our stated meeting Feb 2 at 7:30 with the $5 dinner at 6:30 ($3 for kids)-it is the best deal in town!

Greetings from the East
Arcadia Lodge installed its new officers on December 11. We had a nice crowd in spite of the weather. Thank you to all who were able to come. Arcadia Lodge has experienced some very good membership growth the past several years-one of the fastest growing Lodges in the state of Iowa, raising 15 brothers last year! These new brothers had a reason for joining and made the commitment to Masonry and our Lodge and now we need to be sure we make a commitment to them and continue to give them a reason to stay involved. Whether it be through the many activities Arcadia Lodge offers such as the hay ride, Memorial Day Weekend picnic with Montague Lodge at Pine Lake, Table Lodge, working at ISU, the degrees we put on (we did 45 in 2005), the many committees, or in some other way we need to get these new brothers involved. That is our challenge and needs to be our goal for 2006.
I have appointed Brother Doug Petty, PM to the Property Management Board. He is replacing Brother Dan Shaffer, PM who has served the Property Management Board multiple times in a selfless and tireless capacity. The fine facilities we have in top condition are a tribute to Dan's work in particular and the entire Board as a whole. Dan will continue to work with the Board in an Ex Officio capacity. On behalf of the brothers of Arcadia Lodge I want to say, Thank you, Dan Shaffer, for all you have done.
At our January 5 stated meeting Bill Crawford, Grand Secretary, will be in attendance to present Arcadia Lodge with our second consecutive Gold medal Iowa Lodge of the Year award! Let's fill the Lodge Jan 5, 2006!! Please don't forget the $5 dinner at 6:30. The best deal in town!
Jan 21 is the Lodge Officer's Breakfast at 7 AM at the Scottish Rite in Des Moines. All Brothers can attend & I would encourage as many to go as can.
After 20 capable years of faithfully serving the brother's of Arcadia Lodge, Jim Sears as Treasurer & Don Rhead as Secretary have both announced this will be their final year. I will make more comments at another time, but more immediately we need to groom some replacements. We have two brothers who have stepped forward, but we would be best to have 4 total as in the future we really should have backups for these two vital offices. Please let Jim, Don, or me know if you would be interested. Jan 21, 6:30 PM, at Mount Olive Lodge in Boone, will be an area Secretaries Conference and would be a great opportunity to learn a little more about the offices. I would encourage anyone interested to attend.
Lastly, on a more personal note, Jan 7 at 2 PM at Auburn-Union Lodge in Des Moines is their installation. I am planning on attending as I have gotten to know the new Master, John Leto. If anyone would like to attend they are welcome to ride with me. I can take 3 others comfortably.
