FIRST MEETING OF CLINTON LODGE
September 15, 1847

       In accordance with a dispensation granted August 27, 1847 by the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the State of Iowa to Jacob L. Myers, E. S. Gage, A. R. Sparks, James Jeffers, Wm. Y. Head, Albert L. Connable and William P. Winner, member of the Masonic Fraternity residing in Jefferson County, Iowa, a meeting was held in Fairfield on the 15 th day of September, A. D. 1847, A. L. 5847, for the purpose of organizing a lodge under the name and style of Clinton Lodge.

       Whereupon J. L. Myers having been appointed Master of said Lodge under said dispensation proceeded to organize a Lodge by appointing A. R. Sparks, S. W. pro tem; James Jeffers, J. W. pro tem; W. P. Winner, S. D. pro tem; Wm. Y. Head, J. D. pro tem; E. S. Gage, Secretary pro tem; W. S. Todd, Tyler pro tem.

       The Lodge was then opened in due and ancient form on the First Degree of Masonry when Moses Beirs, a visiting Brother, was admitted and appointed Treasurer pro tem. There being no business before the Lodge in this degree labor were dispensed with for the purpose of opening the Second Degree.

       The Lodge was then opened on the Second Degree and there being no business the labors of this Degree were dispensed with for the purpose of opening the Third Degree.

       The Lodge was then opened on the Third Degree, whereupon the Secretary read the petition of Geo. Acheson and Barnett Ristine praying to be initiated as Entered Apprentice Masons, the former being vouched for by Bros. J. L. Myers and James Jeffers and the latter by J. L. Myers and E. S. Gage.

       On the Motion the petition of Geo. Acheson was referred to a committee of A. R. Sparks, James Jeffers and Wm. Y. Head.

       On motion the petition of Barnett Ristine was referred to a committee of E. S. Gage, W. S. Todd and Wm. P. Winner.

       There being no further business the Lodge was closed on the Third, Second and First Degrees.
